8 Beautiful Waterfalls to Explore in Costa Rica

Costa Rica is loved as a vacation destination because it has plenty to offer. This country appeals to every traveler, from a romantic honeymoon to a family vacation.

The waterfalls in this country are some features attracting attention from far and wide. The natural formations are nothing short of stunning; whether a novice or experienced traveler, you will be stunned by the dramatic rushing waters.

The incredible thing about Costa Rica is that it has waterfalls in plenty; you can decide to visit all of them or a favorite one. Those visiting for several days will have fun rotating the falls. With the homely vacation rentals in Costa Rica, it should be easy to plan your days.

1. La Fortuna Waterfall

This waterfall spills out of the dormant Chato volcano base cliff, hitting the tropical pond below. It is a natural beauty that will make you feel fortunate.

The surroundings are a beautiful green rainforest making the whole experience fulfilling; you should consider carrying your swimsuit to enjoy the pool that’s refreshing at the base, especially on summer days.

Follow the staircase carved onto the hillside to hike from the cliff’s starting point down to the pool for an unforgettable experience. It is among the most stunning places you can visit.

2. Rio Celeste Waterfall

You will find it in Tenorio Volcano National Park in the Guanacaste region. The tropical surroundings and the blue color of the falls attract most people here, making it almost hypnotic. The beautiful turquoise color of the water is unique and results from mineral reactions from the lush rainforest and volcano.

The effects of these minerals mean you cannot enjoy a swim here, but you will, without a doubt, love the view. Your tropical adventure will be made complete by the curious monkeys. Blue morph butterflies and poison dart frogs. It is a hidden gem, but you will have picture-perfect memories to last a lifetime.

3. Montezuma Waterfall

It comprises three waterfalls at the tip of the South Nicoya Peninsula in Montezuma beach town. The most accessible is the first tier, which has a beautiful pool you can jump right into. If your adventurous side allows, you can still access the other two, although the hike can be dangerous.

Non-slip shoes are a must as the paths here can get very slippery. For the fearless, why not take that jump from the waterfall and into the reservoir down below? The drop is about 150 feet tall, so beware before taking that bold step.

4. Llanos De Cortez Waterfall

Some consider this to be the most beautiful of all the waterfalls in Costa Rica. You, therefore, do not want to miss all its glory when in Bagaces. The most striking feature is its width; it can be considered wider than taller. It stands at 12 feet and is 50 feet wide.

The cascading water from the streams makes it a sight to behold. You will love the clean, clear pool at the base where you can enjoy a swim. Also notable here is the small white sandy beach perfect for a picnic. Taking the trail will give you a memorable experience thanks to the dense forest with monkeys and birds.

5. Nauyaca Waterfall

When visiting this waterfall, you can choose the trail that takes you to the upper falls or the one taking you to the lower falls. The upper falls of the Nauyaca Waterfall fall a great distance making it simply impressive. You will love the misty blows, which refresh, especially after that hike.

You can use the smooth rocks for your snacking or picnic as you enjoy the tranquil view. If you love fun, then the lower falls are waiting for you. Enjoy a swim in the clear blue pool big enough to hold several people. You might also be lucky to catch daring cliff jumps from the locals. If hikes are not your thing, horseback riding is a possibility.

6. Catarata De Toro Waterfall

This waterfall is majestic at 270 feet, giving it an unreal mesmerizing look and feel. The extinct volcanic crater from where the water streams out create a curtain-like look before hitting the pool at the base. The cloud forest and vibrant orange and red colors on the cliffs make the falls a pleasant sight you will love to behold.

The volcanic origin of the rocks is said to be the reason behind the beautiful colors. The waterfall does not have crowds probably because of its location; you can enjoy a more personalized wildlife encounter while here. You will love how dramatic the cliffs with moss and ferns look.

7. La Paz Waterfall

This waterfall is in Cloud Forest. It is a privately owned ecological attraction but attracts huge numbers of visitors, maybe because it is more than just a waterfall. When here, you will get to enjoy the hummingbird Garden, serpentarium, frog exhibit, and butterfly observatory, besides the five waterfalls and rejuvenating nature walks.

The waterfalls garden is open all year, and since it is self-guided, you can have a personalized experience meeting your expectations. With so much to see and enjoy here, you should dedicate an entire day to it.

8. Volio Waterfall

It is near Bribri town in Limon Province, and the best here for that matter. It may not be as popular but is a great spot for international and local tourists probably because of how adventurous the tours here are. The dry season is the best since you can cover much, especially guided vehicle tours.

The waterfall drops into a large pool below, and you can enjoy a swim here. The rainforest surroundings and the fact the waterfall is hidden creates a serene view, but it is also advisable that you take the guided tour options available for safety reasons.

Wrapping up

Costa Rica is largely casual so slip into your comfortable shorts, tops, and sandals. You can also still throw in simple dresses and polo shirts for those nice dinners you may want to experience.

Insect protection, sunglasses and hats, hiking shoes, and raincoats are some of the other items you should consider taking with you when visiting. Fortunately, when it comes to accommodation, the rentals will make your stay feel like home. You just need to choose the best for your preferences and plan your visit appropriately.
