7 Things to Do While in Cabo San Lucas
Cabo San Lucas is a quaint resort city found in the Baja California peninsula of Mexico.
National Geographic and Forbes Magazine recognized it as one of the best tourist destinations because of its picturesque attractions and luxurious hotel infrastructure.
The city offers something for every traveler, so whether you are looking for an escape from the busy life, a venue to hold your special event, or simply a place to relax and enjoy fun activities, Cabo San Lucas can do all that.
With over three million tourists visiting the city annually, Cabo San Lucas has a booming tourism industry expected to continue growing in the coming years. In fact, the Los Cabos Airport has been building additions for the past 7 years and will soon open a third terminal.
If you ever get a chance to visit this beautiful city, there are certain things that you should not miss out on and include in your travel itinerary.
Specifically, here are seven activities that you should do while in Cabo San Lucas!
1. Dive in the Sea of Cortez
Cabo San Lucas was first famous for being a resort and scuba destination, so diving in the Sea of Cortez is a must-do activity.
The Sea of Cortez is a special place that features some of the most diverse marine life, with over 800 aquatic vertebrates and a variety of dolphins and whales, and water in different shades.
While diving in Cabo, you can expect to find schooling hammerheads, humpback whales, dolphins, tuna, and marlins. If you are lucky, you may also find manta rays and whale sharks within the sea’s vast waters.
The Sea of Cortez typically shows good weather conditions from June to November, though some marine species noticeably appear during certain times of the year.
Adult whale sharks, for example, tend to show up during April and May, while sea lion juveniles are out and playful in August and September. If you are not a huge fan of diving, you can also consider snorkeling to see inshore fish and coral reefs.
2. Ride a Horse on the Coastline
Horseback riding through the Baja desert and along the Pacific Ocean is popular among tourists as Cabo San Lucas is home to several stables.
You can sign up for different route rides, assisted by a guide, and explore locations such as rock formations, coastlines, and deserts.
These riding tours are the perfect way to explore Cabo’s sights while enjoying the cool breeze outdoors. Horseback riding is also available for all members of the household, with children being accompanied by adults.
3. Whale Watching Tours
Whales pass through Cabo San Lucas a few months in a year, and historically, January to March has shown to be your best chance to see them.
Go on a boat ride with thousands of other whale spectators and enjoy the whale watching season--truly a once in a lifetime opportunity!
While out in the water, you may even get the chance to experience a close encounter with a curious whale. The smaller the boat you are riding, the higher the chance of getting close to one.
If crowded boats are not your cup of tea, there are plenty of private boat rentals in Cabo San Lucas available for your next adventure!
4. Grab a Drink in Sammy’s Famous Club
While in Cabo San Lucas, you should not miss out on the chance to grab a drink in the city’s famous Cabo Wabo Cantina.
If you are lucky, you may even get to watch some of Sammy’s impromptu performances.
However, regardless of when you visit the club, you will still be able to enjoy your drink with live songs playing during the evening.
Cabo Wabo also offers a selection of American and Mexican food to pair with your drink--the perfect combination to relax and enjoy the night. If that isn’t your style then look around - you are in the center of all the restaurants and stores. There will be options for a great meal within one block in any direction!
5. Hike in the Desert
Hiking in Cabo’s desert allows you to see beautiful rock formations, greenery, and indigenous wild animals native to the region.
Doing this is best during the wintertime, when the temperature is much cooler, though it is also possible to hike during summer. It is best to hike with an experienced tour guide who knows the area as there is a high risk of getting lost when doing it alone.
Pure Cabo tours have family packages to Fox Canyon that includes round trip transfers, your guide, and all you’ll need.
Other similar activities that you can try out include taking a natural history tour, visiting the Sierra de la Laguna Mountains, and going on a field trip to old ghost mining towns.
6. Go to the Bird Sanctuary
The San Jose Estuary and Bird Sanctuary is home to hundreds of bird species, such as frigate birds, egrets, white herons, and brownish pelicans.
You can ride a kayak to explore this area and enjoy a green haven while watching the birds.
If you can, try to visit the sanctuary before sunrise or sunset as these are two of the most breathtaking views you would not want to miss.
As many tourists are visiting this place, you will easily find an information center to answer any questions you may have.
7. Visit Enthusiast's Beach
Enthusiast’s Beach, also known as Playa del Amor, may be slightly harder to visit due to its offshore location, but it is certainly worth it.
This beach is donned with dramatic rock formations and the popular El Arco arch that is photographed by millions of tourists.
There are two sides - Lovers Beach that is accessible from the Sea of Cortez. Once on you can walk a short distance to the other side know as “divorce beach” for it’s large crashing waves from the Pacific ocean.
You can reach this destination through a watercraft, kayak, or marine taxi, all of which are easily accessible, whether you are going to or from the beach!
