Where to Find the Most Famous Beaches in the Greek Islands

It’s no secret that Greece and its surrounding islands are home to some of the world’s most beautiful beaches. From soft sandy stretches, to otherworldly rocky plains, Greece’s roster of coastal beauty spots can rival any other country in the world.

Whether you’re island hopping or setting up shop in just one spot, you’re guaranteed to find stunning beaches wherever you are in this awe-inspiring archipelago. Here, we’ve taken on the tricky task of picking out three of the best beaches Greece has to offer – which of these will you be visiting first?

Red Beach, Santorini

Red Beach is unarguably one of the most famous beaches anywhere in the Greek Islands. Unusual in its makeup, this coastal wonderland is framed by volcanic red rock cliffs, which provide the most memorable backdrop for your day at the beach.

If you visit the Red Beach, be sure to pack your snorkeling gear. It’s one of the most renowned spots on the island for underwater exploration, with the unique rock formations briefly transporting you to another world.

Access to the beach is relatively easy, too – a car park is just a short walk away. However, its location on the southwest coast means it’s a little away from the popular resorts of Fira and Oia, so you may have to set an entire day aside to visit this natural wonder.

Myrtos Beach, Kefalonia

Arguably best known as being a movie set for Hollywood blockbusters like Captain Corelli’s Mandolin, the beauty of Kefalonia’s shoreline hasn’t gone unnoticed by us, and it’s home to some of the region’s most spectacular sandy stretches.

Myrtos is a quintessential Grecian beach with all the ingredients you could need for a perfect day at the seaside. Nestled away in the north of the island, Myrtos is a popular beach amongst locals and tourists alike all throughout the year. Before heading down to the beach, snap a picture from the road hanging just above it – from here, you’ll be able to get the best shot of the sandy shore and the glistening waters below.

Sarakiniko Beach, Milos

Sarakiniko stands alone as one of Greece’s most distinctive and unique beaches. If you’re looking to waste away a day lounging on some silky sand, then this isn’t the place for you. Instead of swathes of golden sand, you’ll be greeted by a lunar landscape, with the beach’s white rocks giving visitors an out-of-this-world experience. There is a very small patch of sand, but this soon gets crowded early in the day, so expect to be laying your towel on the rocks – a small price to pay for the unforgettable scenery.

It’s a very popular spot for swimming, with caves and coves a common feature along the coastline. There are also several jump-off spots where you can plunge into the azure depths below. Do note that the best time to visit Sarakiniko is during the early morning or late afternoon, as the sun reflects off the white rocks during the day, making it uncomfortably warm and bright. Head to this stunning beach in the evening, and catch the last of the sun as it dips into the Aegean Sea.
