3 Watersports You Need To Try In Costa Rica
Costa Rica is known for its beautiful landscapes, but there are better ways to experience them than simply hiking!
First and foremost, this is a country for adventure lovers. While a stroll through one of the many beautiful rainforests can be quaint, it certainly goes up another level if you’re taking in the sights while ziplining at nearly 700 feet!
The same can be said for the water. Sure, you could remain a passive (and dry!) observer, but it’s far more of an experience if you become one with the waves and use them to get the adrenaline pumping!
Thankfully, the Costa Rican people know this better than anyone. Throughout the country, there are a number of watersports spots where, with the help of experienced instructors, you can put your skills to the test and experience the sapphire-blue waters the proper way.
So which are the best Costa Rica watersports to try out and why? Below, we’ve listed our favourite sports that you have to experience if you are planning the ultimate Costa Rican vacation;
1. Water Skiing
We’re going to start with the classic: water skiing. The best thing about this sport is the fact that anyone can do it. You don’t need to know how to be an expert waterskier. All you need to know about water skiing is that it requires confidence and know-how – both of which can be given to you by the instructors themselves.
What's more, once you’re on the water and feeling balanced, it can actually be a pretty smooth and pleasant journey. This is even more of a positive if you’re going water skiing under the shadow of Arenal Volcano on Lake Arenal! All you have to do is keep your balance and watch the beautiful landscape whizz past you!
2. Wakeboarding
The difference between water skiing and wakeboarding is that, with wakeboarding, you only have one board that both feet are strapped to. This makes it generally a bit more tricky to control and balance, but perfect for those who are looking to master some wakeboard jumps and tricks while they’re on the water.
That’s not to say it’s only reserved for the pros, however. If you’re looking for a challenge, wakeboarding can be a brilliant experience to test your skills and put yourself outside of your comfort zone, no matter what your skill set.
3. Tubing
You might be thinking: great, but what if I want to get on the water without a leg workout?! Well, you don’t have to! If you’d like to get the adrenaline pumping but don’t feel too confident on skis or a wakeboard, then you could always try tubing, which involves being towed along by a motorboat in a giant inflatable tube.
When it comes to having fun, you can’t really beat this as an activity, especially if you’re on a lake with smooth water and stunning views. But don’t think that this is a way to stay dry. Believe us when we say these tubes go fast, and – with a particularly mischievous driver – you don’t always stay on top of them for very long. So be prepared to get wet!
