How to Make a House a Home

How to Make a House a Home

Whether you’ve just bought a new home or started renting a place, you’ll probably want to do what you can to make your space your own.

It can be hard to know where to start! Luckily, we’ve got some ideas:

1. Get some statement bedding

One of the quickest ways to define the overall aesthetic of a bedroom is with the bedding, especially if everything else about the room is neutral.

Interestingly, one survey found that the bed is the most defining factor in helping people feel at home in their house, even more than displaying family photos!

If neutral, earthy tones are your thing, find some bedding in your favourite shade of green, camel or mustard yellow. Find some bedding in a soft, white boucle material for a cosy look that makes it a warm, inviting space.

Or go for a bolder bedding set with a bright floral print that harmonises with the other decorations in your room. Ditsy prints can also be eye-catching and fun, perfect for giving your bedroom the feeling of a rural country cottage.

2. Brighten up dark corners

If your living space contains dark corners that impact the room's overall mood, there are many ways to remedy this!

Redecorating the walls with a lighter colour is one option, but if you’re renting, make sure you get your landlord’s permission first.

It can also help to play around with the lighting. Have you ensured no pieces of furniture are stopping the light from your windows from reaching the darker spaces?

Or could you install a standing lamp or a sconce?

3. Display some photos and artwork

Nothing personalises a space quite like a few photos and a piece of artwork you’ve picked out yourself. If you’re creative, you could create a collage of photos and put the final piece into a frame.

Another creative way to display your photos is to use small pegs to attach them to a long piece of string or some string lights.

You don’t have to go too much expense either. You could search for unframed vintage prints online and then get them framed by a local business.

4. Cosy it up

Add plenty of fabric finishing touches to your home to make it feel more personal and welcoming! Fabric throws and pillows are a great way to soften the look of your furniture and create a space you’ll want to keep coming back to.

A cosy rug can really enhance the beauty of a wood or laminate floor. It’s also a great way to make walking across your floor a warmer experience for your feet in winter!

Sometimes you don’t have to do anything major to make your new home feel more personal. It’s the finishing touches that are key!

Wrapping up

Making your house into a home is a process that requires time and effort.

You can start by adding personal touches to the space, such as decorating with family photos, painting the walls a colour you love, and organizing the clutter.

Creating a space where you can relax and be comfortable is essential to making your house a home.

As you continue to add your unique style, you will create your space and be a place where you can find peace and joy!
